This is your Brain…This is your Brain on the Neuroheadset!

Does anyone remember that Public Service Announcement during the “Just say no” Nancy Regan era?… or am I just an old fart! You know the frying pan…with the egg? Alright… you suck!
I came across this article about a device that you strap to your head that detect conscious thoughts, expressions and non-conscious emotions based on electrical signals around the brain that will act like a joystick hotwired from your brain to your PC! Sound freekin’ sick huh? Check it out:
While motion-controlled gaming with systems like the Nintendo Wii are all the rage, new technology heading for consumers this year goes further, sensing facial expressions, emotions and even thoughts. Focus your mind to cast a magic spell. Smile or wink and your on-screen avatar does the same. Get mellow and background music matches your mood. These are some of the possibilities promised by Emotiv Systems, which plans to sell its wireless ”neuroheadset” later this year (for around $300).
The neuroheadset is a lightweight, sleek and easy-to-use wireless device, featuring sensors that detect conscious thoughts, expressions and non-conscious emotions based on electrical signals around the brain. Emotiv’s technology processes these signals, enabling players to control their in-game character’s expressions or actions and influence gameplay using their thoughts, expressions and emotions. In fact Emotiv’s headset can detect more than 30 different expressions, emotions and mental actions. They include feelings like excitement and frustration, expressions like raised eyebrows and clenched teeth, and thoughts about movement such as pushing, pulling, lifting and dropping. Visualization techniques also can make in-game objects vanish.
“Being able to control a computer with your mind is the ultimate quest of human-machine interaction,” said Nam Do, CEO of Emotiv Systems. “When integrated into games, virtual worlds and other simulated environments, this technology will have a profound impact on the user’s experience. Since announcing our prototype last year, we’ve made dramatic technological breakthroughs in order to create the first wearable, affordable brain-controlled gaming headset. We’re excited to see our vision realized this year and look forward to enabling gamers out there to experience brain-controlled gaming for themselves.”
Dude!… welcome to the 21st Century! I’m not sure that this will translate to the popular consoles(PS3, Wii, Xbox 360), but who knows? Sony had some great technology for the PS2 with the eyetoy.. but they buried it (idiots). Where do we go next?… the Star Trek holodeck? That would be cool… I’m such a geek!
